Think: Just recently I inherited a new team at work. In the first few weeks I was busy trying to get my arms around all of the tasks and deliverables that are part of this teams workload...then thank goodness I woke up one day and decided my most important task was to get to know each and every person on the team. Here is what I have discovered (so far):

  • I have a trained opera singer on my team
  • A gentleman who owns a company in the Congo
  • Someone who mined for gold in Alaska and Canada...for 10 years
  • A woman who is married to a man from Tanzania
  • A man raised in the mountains of Tennessee whose Father spent his last dime to see that he would have a college education
  • A woman who practices the Jewish Sabbath at sundown each Friday with her husband
  • A man who spent last Thursday with his son riding the train to Tacoma (yes Pastor Ben Tacoma), exploring the Chiluly Museum
  • A man getting married and about to become a step dad to a young girl (most telling was his comment of how much he respected the girls natural father)

I almost missed these moments and the chance to see just a little bit of the uniqueness of these individuals. I almost missed getting a glimpse into what is important in these individuals lives. It has been a wonderful and humbling experience. Jesus teaches us so many lessons about how important relationships are; how loving him, and loving our neighbors are really what is important (See Mark 12: 28-34).

And just to cap my day I found out my dentist is from Shiraz, Iran, her father was in the military before the revolution. He escaped with his wife, daughters and son to U.S. in the nick of time. I can't wait to learn more!  What has been made so clear to me this week is how much more I need and desire to know about those that God has placed in my path.

Ask: How interested am I in the people around me?  Am I more focused on my needs rather than theirs?   What can I do to turn my attention to my neighbors this week?

Pray: Father help me to take a true interest in my friends, my family, my associates at work. Help me listen, and listen with compassion. Help me to love my neighbor. In Jesus name I pray.  Amen.

The eDevotional is written each week by a team of volunteers from Timberlake Church.
