Weekend Speaker: Dave Nelson
Theme: People of the Second Chance
This eDevotional was written by a volunteer from Timberlake Church
Read: John 8:1-11
Think: Jesus’ was the ultimate example of God’s grace. We all make mistakes, have regretted them and thankfully, most of them are kept between you and God. But imagine if you were found out about an adulterous affair you were in?
When our guest speaker Dave Nelson spoke about God’s grace, I immediately thought of John 8:1-11, where the leaders of the Church brought a woman to Jesus saying that she had been caught in the act of adultery.
I loved how Pastor Dave talked about what we would typically say as Christians… My thoughts wandered to “What a terrible woman”, “How could she do that to her husband?”, “What a disgrace”, or “She deserves it”. Then I listen to God’s love flowing through Jesus, and I’m humbled. Hear His words:
“Let any one of you who is without sin be the first to throw a stone at her.”
How often am I ready to cast stones at my family, neighbors, co-workers or team? How often do I give grace to others, knowing that is what Christ would do, but instead (embarrassingly) go with the crowd and persecute others for their bad behavior? I guess I’m a Pharisee at heart… much in the need of Jesus help and example.
Do: I know this may be a little cliché, but when someone does something wrong to you or offends you, think to yourself, What Would Jesus Do? Then adjust your response accordingly. See how your grace affects the offender and others around you.
Pray: Dear Lord, give me strength to do the OUGHTS and the perseverance to avoid the OUGHT NOTS. Let me be that pillar of Christ’s Love and Grace in my community, work place and home. In the Name of Jesus I pray, Amen!
